SQLSurrey

Welcome to the SQLSurrey PASS Chapter

We are SQLSurrey, the SQL Server Usergroup based in Guildford and surrounding areas. We're a group of SQL enthusiasts from the area who specialise in the MSBI & Azure side of things, but we'll be hosting a range talks across the whole SQL spectrum.

We're hoping to build up a community of like-minded peers to share knowledge, sharpen skills and enjoy a few beers. It's pretty important to us that these aren't lectures - we'll be occupying the back room of a pub and keeping things informal as best we can!

Featured Presentation:

First look at Azure DataBricks by Simon Whiteley

Simon Whiteley, Chief Cloud Architect Adatis Consulting

There’s been a lot of hype about a new contender on the Azure scene known as Azure DataBricks. You may be aware that it has something to do with Spark & Hadoop, but what actually is it? How do you use it? We thought it would be good to run an informal session to talk through what DataBricks actually is, how it’s different to HDInsight, where you can use it within BI, Data Science and general analytics scenarios. We’ll then run through how to set up a new instance, how you manage clusters, jobs, notebooks etc and some basic examples of integrating with Data Lake, SQL Data Warehouse etc. If you have any questions, use-cases, scenarios etc, then why not fire them over in advance and we’ll try and cover them in the session!

About Simon:
Coming from a world of traditional BI structures, Simon is now obsessed with utilising cloud technologies to revolutionise these traditions. He will dive into any interesting BI problem, whether its ETL patterns, analysis models or building custom D3 visualisations. As a Microsoft Data Platform MVP, his main focus is harnessing Azure Data Services to build the next generation of Cloud Analytics Architectures!

GDPR and the Azure Data Catalog by José Mendes

Jose Mendes, Senior Data Analytics Consultant Adatis

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), due to take effect on the 25th May, defines a new set of rules for privacy rights, security and compliance. To help the organizations to stay complacent with the GDPR, Microsoft has developed a four-step process, namely Discover, Manage, Protect and Report. In this session, we will deep dive in the Azure Data Catalog and understand how it is integrated in the Discover process and how can provide the organization with a strategic platform to become and stay GDPR complacent.

About Jose:
A Data Analytics specialist with over 7 years’ experience in delivering Microsoft Azure/ SQL Data Analytics solutions across a range of industries, based in Europe and Africa. After joining Adatis, he started to share his knowledge on the Traditional BI Stack and Azure services through blogs and talks.
