Welcome to the SQLSurrey PASS Chapter

We are SQLSurrey, the SQL Server Usergroup based in Guildford and surrounding areas. We're a group of SQL enthusiasts from the area who specialise in the MSBI & Azure side of things, but we'll be hosting a range talks across the whole SQL spectrum.

We're hoping to build up a community of like-minded peers to share knowledge, sharpen skills and enjoy a few beers. It's pretty important to us that these aren't lectures - we'll be occupying the back room of a pub and keeping things informal as best we can!

Next Meeting

SQLSurrey November Meetup - Lambda Architecture and Always Encrypted

  • In-Person @ White House Pub Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom (map)
  • 18:00 - 21:00 (UTC+00:00) Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
  • Language: English

We'll be following the usual agenda - a quick update about the group, general announcements and PASS news. Followed by the two talks from our guest speakers.

Sessions take place in a private room on the top floor of the White House pub. We'll be hanging around afterwards for drinks & food (on us!) and sharing opinions / thoughts on the topic of the talk and general industry activity!

Would be great to see you there, and, as always, get in touch if you'd like to speak at an upcoming event!

Featured Presentation:

Business Intelligence in Azure: Lambda Architecture

Simon Whiteley, Chief Cloud Architect Adatis Consulting

Technology changes quickly - patterns and approaches less so. As we move towards distributed cloud architectures we will employ a range of disparate tools, the patterns that were designed for single box solutions may not be appropriate any more. This session will take you through the patterns and processes that underpin the Lambda architecture, providing advice and guidance on the tool sets and integration points between them. We will review a working solution following the movement of data through batch and speed layers via Azure Data Lake Store & Analytics, SQL DataWarehouse and Streaming Analytics, before looking briefly at where business logic tools such as Azure Analysis Services and PowerBI fit in.

About Simon:
Coming from a world of traditional BI structures, Simon is now obsessed with utilising cloud technologies to revolutionise these traditions. He will dive into any interesting BI problem, whether its ETL patterns, analysis models or building custom D3 visualisations. As a Microsoft Data Platform MVP, his main focus is harnessing Azure Data Services to build the next generation of Cloud Analytics Architectures!

An Introduction to Always Encrypted

James Russell, Data Analytics Consultant Adatis Consulting Ltd

Have you ever had the need to encrypt data in SQL Server or heard about data encryption and wondered what it involves? SQL Server 2016 has a new feature called Always Encrypted which has been very widely implemented and received with positive feedback from the SQL community. I will discuss and show how to implement and use it, show some of the possible uses as well as potential limitations to look out for.

About James:
James is a seasoned business intelligence consultant, working with a range of systems across on-prem and Azure. He has a passion for digging into new features, understanding how they fit into wider architectures and the best practice for implementation. James has recently been working on large-scale analytics platform implementations, using Data Lake Store & Analytics, Data Factory V2 & a range of Azure orchestration components to reinvent our approach to BI.
