SQLSurrey

Welcome to the SQLSurrey PASS Chapter

We are SQLSurrey, the SQL Server Usergroup based in Guildford and surrounding areas. We're a group of SQL enthusiasts from the area who specialise in the MSBI & Azure side of things, but we'll be hosting a range talks across the whole SQL spectrum.

We're hoping to build up a community of like-minded peers to share knowledge, sharpen skills and enjoy a few beers. It's pretty important to us that these aren't lectures - we'll be occupying the back room of a pub and keeping things informal as best we can!

SQLSurrey March Meetup - Azure SQL Database Managed Instances and Master Your Data in the Cloud

  • In-Person @ White House Pub Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom (map)
  • 19:00 - 21:30 (UTC+00:00) Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
  • Language: English

We're back from SQLBits and have managed to talk to plenty of great people from the world of SQL who are keen to come along and join us at SQLSurrey! Come along and join us for the first of these meetups with 2 fantastic talks, of course as usual drinks and buffett food will be provided by us! Session 1: What are Azure SQL Database Managed Instances? The range of options for storing data in Microsoft Azure keeps growing, the most notable recent addition is the Managed Instance. But what is it, and why is it there? Join John as he walks through what they are and how you might start using them. Managed Instances add a new option for running workloads in the cloud. Allowing near parity with a traditional on-premises SQL Server. Including SQL Agent, Cross Database Queries, Service Broker, CDC, and many more. Overcoming many of the challenges to using Azure SQL Databases. But, what is the reality, how do we make use of it, and are there any gotcha’s that we need to be aware of? This is what we will cover, going beyond the hype and looking at how we can make use of this new technology. Details: We'll be following the usual agenda - a quick update about the group, general announcements and PASS news. Followed by the two talks from our guest speakers. Would be great to see you there, and, as always, get in touch if you'd like to speak at an upcoming event!

Master Your Data in the Cloud

Matt How, Buisness Intelligence Consultant Adatis

As data warehouses become more advanced and move to the cloud, Master Data Management is often bottom of the list. Being tied to an IaaS VM solely for MDS feels like a big step in the wrong direction! In this session, I will show you the secret of ‘app-iness with a cloud alternative which pieces together Azure and Office 365 services to deliver a beautifully mobile ready front end, coupled with a serverless, scalable and artificially intelligent back end.

About Matt:
Matt is a Business Intelligence specialist with a commitment to staying up to date with the latest tech and delivering solutions that clients want to use. With a strong knowledge of both the traditional SQL BI Stack and modern data warehouse architecture, Matt strives to pass on his learning to the community where possible.
